Ben Vickers is a New Mexico-based professional photographer and United States Air Force veteran. Originally from North Texas, his love of photography began while watching his father work in a darkroom. Seeing photographs emerge beneath the glow of a safelight sparked a fascination with the craft that has remained with him throughout his life.
After a 25-year career in technology, Ben turned his focus to photography. His work spans landscapes, macro, wildlife, and black-and-white imagery, inspired by New Mexico and the American Southwest. He volunteers with Albuquerque Animal Welfare, Bernalillo County Animal Care Services, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, helping animals find homes and honoring fellow veterans.
Participating in the New Mexico Cancer Center’s Gallery with a Cause is especially meaningful to Ben. His father, who introduced him to photography, and his stepmother are cancer survivors, giving this exhibition a deeply personal connection.
Artist Statement
For me, photography is more than capturing a scene; it’s an exploration driven by curiosity—a search for beauty in everyday moments. New Mexico’s vast landscapes, dramatic skies, and extraordinary light offer endless inspiration.
I’m fascinated by the interplay of light and shadow and how a subtle shift can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Whether I’m chasing the vibrant hues of the Southwest, studying the textures of a landscape, exploring the tiny worlds of macro, or embracing the simplicity of black and white, my goal is the same: to capture fleeting moments where light changes everything.
My work is shaped by a desire not only to document what I see, but to share how it feels to stand in that place—to invite the viewer into the quiet wonder, emotion, or atmosphere of a moment. Each photograph is part of my ongoing effort to see the world differently and share that vision, offering a moment of beauty, reflection, and perhaps a little hope.
