Biography
Allison Jones Hunt is an Albuquerque abstract painter who believes that art is a verb—an act of listening rather than just making. Recognized as a Harwood Art Center Emerging Artist of New Mexico, her work is known for its luminous layers of color that invite the viewer to pause, breathe, and feel it all. Allison’s practice is informed by her life with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Navigating a body that has limits has taught her that creativity does not—she paints to translate the invisible language of pain and hope into something tangible and bright. This philosophy is the heartbeat of her teaching at the New Mexico Art League and the Corrales Arts Center. In her classroom, painting is not about perfection, but about "the open hand" — learning to trust the process, embrace the unexpected, and tell the truth on canvas. Her work has been exhibited across the Southwest and Pacific Northwest, but her favorite place to be is in the studio, messy with paint, listening for that still, small voice.
Artist Statement
My creative process is a form of spiritual practice—a receptive, intuitive dance with God. In my new collection, The Season of Singing Has Come, I explore the intricate relationship between color and the sedimentary nature of memory. Inspired by the Biblical poetry of the Song of Songs, these pieces use a meditative layering of warm and cool tones to capture the feeling of a season changing. For me, every layer of color is an act of listening. My work is built on the belief that there are no mistakes, only more layers. Every "error" is simply history that adds depth to the final piece, much like the experiences that shape our own lives. As an instructor at the New Mexico Art League and Corrales Arts Center, I teach this philosophy of resilience: that we can always build something beautiful out of what we have been given.
