Born in New York and raised in Florida, Storm Sermay has lived in New Mexico for 47 years. Her photography began in 2008 after taking classes at Mesilla Digital Imaging in Las Cruces and at Santa Fe Photo Workshops both in the U.S. and internationally. She works in both black & white and in color. With her flower photography, she creates one-of-a-kind hand-colored photographs in pencil and pastel. Storm started doing street photography in 2013 on a trip to Cuba and she has done several street photography projects. She also photographs landscapes and seascapes extensively around the Western U.S.
Locally she is active in the Border Artists, a group consisting of 20 members (by invitation) including painters, sculptors, photographers, metal and stone workers, printmakers, and mixed media artists. As member of the Doña Ana Photography Club she has presented programs and taught a number of photography workshops. Her work was selected for a public art project at the El Paso International Airport in 2014. In 2017, 2019, and 2020 her photos in several exhibits received Judge’s Awards. She has also been invited to exhibit her work at galleries in El Paso, TX.
Artist Statement
Sometimes, just as I am falling asleep, images become jumbled and create strange visions. With many of these images, I have begun to create my own photographic landscapes from the places I visit. In the digital darkroom, I blend and fuse items of the natural world that I see in my travels to create the visions I see in my imagination.
Even in my landscape and nature work using straight, unmanipulated photography, the intent is not to document a place but a feeling - to allow the viewer to actively engage with the world I present.
