Biography
George Cannon is a photographer and digital artist currently based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has worked as a professional photographer for over fifty years, photographing nature and landscape, street photography and architecture, weddings and events, theatre and dance, portraits, and studio nudes. He published his first award-winning book of photography in 1979 and has published over twenty more books of art since that first publication. He has participated in shows across the country and has taught photography and design in Continuing Education for over ten years. He also owned a commission studio in stained and leaded glass for twelve years and retired from the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art where he was a gallery preparator for sixteen years. His photographic work varies across many subjects, always striving to act as a witness to how we live, the mark we leave on the planet, and seeking to find beauty in the everyday so often ignored. His digital abstract work explores color, design, movement, and emotion, derived from and inspired by his photographic images.
Statement
My work is constantly evolving, influenced by all things that life brings. Much of my imagery over the years has focused on our mark as humans on the planet. Our environments, our amusements, our cultures, and our decay. As a result, urban landscape and street photography influenced much of my work, in contrast to my years shooting nature and landscape. My commercial work has brought me back to people, photographing portraiture, head shots, weddings, fashion, stage and theater productions, and fine art nudes. With digital technology has come the ability to take images and expand them in new and expressive ways. My work throughout my career has been about design. One of my most recent books, Visual Conversations (Imageguy Art Books / Blurb) explores the creation of a narrative in the viewer's mind deriving from the structure of an image and its relationship to the viewer's own experience. What shapes our reaction to a picture or artwork? My work is intended to bring about a reaction, a conversation. It is my opinion that art needs to be lived with and experienced. It can connect with us in unexpected ways, reaching toward a deeper meaning we may not have anticipated.
