Heidi was first introduced to the joys of painting as a child of ten years old. A local artist gave lessons which provided her with foundational knowledge of working with oil paints. Through the years she would circle back to painting, but her creative impulses weren't confined to producing a piece of art. When she planted a garden, she focused on the composition and color palette of the plants. Decorating cakes became an art form. Working with young children in an atelier gave her a daily routine to explore techniques and a variety of media.
In 2019 she and her husband retired and moved to Santa Fe. She finally had the luxury of time and a space for art materials. She dove back into creating artwork. Then she was diagnosed with breast cancer and for a year and a half she did nothing creatively. She is cancer free now. With renewed energy and inspiration, she spends at least two hours in the studio each day. She realized during this new creative phase that when she finished her daily engagement, she had a sense of joy. Every day she wakes up and looks forward to time in the studio. Her style and technique are evolving as she approaches her art unencumbered and with exuberance. Her new pieces literally convey “joy”. Each piece has the word somewhere on the canvas as a reminder to live a joyful life.
Part of that joy is portrayed through vibrant, saturated color. Some pieces are highly textured through a palette knife application. While others are glossy and smooth with fine brushwork. Heidi does not restrict herself to one style. At any given moment she may have a realistic landscape in progress and on another easel a bold abstract with intuitive mark making. She works primarily with acrylics but will also return to oils and gouache. Limitations and rules are not for her.
