Biography
Ken was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he attended Valley High School before earning a bachelor’s degree in political science, with a minor in Russian Studies, from the University of New Mexico. He lived in Grand Lake, Colorado, from 1980 to 2000 before returning to New Mexico and making Corrales his home.
Ken began drawing in elementary school. Because of a birth defect, he was unable to communicate effectively until the age of nine, and drawing and painting became his natural means of expression. He began selling his work while living in Colorado. In 2001, he encountered the work of Patrick Hughes at the Exploratorium in San Francisco; that experience, together with the influence of his father, a cabinetmaker, inspired him to create the three-dimensional canvases for which he is now known.
Ken’s work is included in private collections in Chicago, Houston, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland.
Artist Statement
Painting gives Ken a way to explore color, light, shape, form, perspective, and social concerns. For Ken, his three-dimensional paintings are more than an illusion of movement. Like a flip book, in which each page shifts slightly from the one before it, the image changes as the viewer moves past it. From one position it may appear still; from another, it continually reshapes what the viewer perceives.
