My journey into photography began when my father brought me a Minolta “spy camera” from Japan. Over the years, my passion for photography evolved, and by the time I was in college, I knew I wanted to create large, breathtaking images capturing the vast vistas I encountered throughout the West and around the world. I also wanted to reveal the intimate details of nature - flowers in bloom, cascading waterfalls - and the character etched in the weathered faces of fishermen in Baja, Mexico.
Although I studied Art Education at the University of New Mexico, my path led me to earn two additional degrees in Earth Sciences and to a 40-year career teaching science. Throughout my travels, I photographed the world through a lens of “awe’” developing a deep appreciation for nature’s power and the delicate balance of the planet’s biomes. Each summer, I attended institutes and workshops that took me across the USA and abroad - to New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. My photos have appeared in scientific literature, showcasing subjects from whale flukes off the coast of New Zealand to dramatic uplifts and contorted formations in the San Juan Basin.
I was invited to create the *Teacher’s Guide to Valles Caldera website for New Mexico EPSCoR, where all the site images are my own. My connection to the Jemez Mountains dates to my teen years as a camp counselor and cook at age 14. Overtime, I have served on advisory boards for *Discovery Magazine*, IMAX (*Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk*), and the National Solar Observatory (NOAO), each experience offering opportunities to photograph and share the beauty I encountered.
Since retiring from the Albuquerque Academy, where I taught Earth Systems Science, I have spent several years showing and selling my work. My husband John and I devote more time to photographic expeditions in our four-wheel-drive Sports mobile van. Our adventures have included “100 Days in Alaska”, “Chasing Fall” - a two-month journey from New Mexico to Newfoundland and back - and one of my favorites, the trip to Baja photographing whales and enjoying the peninsula.
