Biography

Sophia Wroblewski is a queer artist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sophia spent her first few years in northern Maryland, eventually moving to Santa Fe, NM. Sophia attended the Jesuit University of Regis in Denver, Colorado. The familiarity of New Mexico drew her back allowing her art and overall style to evolve and expand. She studied in Albuquerque, NM, where she received her BFA in Studio Art at the University of New Mexico in 2024. Sophia uses the inspiration of the East Coast and the Southwest to help fuel the ideas for her very complex layouts and subject matters.

Artist Statement

Abstraction and patterns have always been intuitive processes for me. Because of this, I create intricate designs layered on top of one another to form complex arrangements, almost like mosaics on paper, in my drawings with gel pens. Doing these works is an extensive and demanding process due to the countless detailed sections filled with my zentangle designs. Through my work, I aim to create an all-consuming and exciting experience for the viewer that causes their eyes to return rather than something absorbed in seconds or minutes.

Recently, I have been creating focal points in the drawings that are easily hidden and present simultaneously. Some other techniques I use for my work are graphic design, painting, and pyrography (wood burning). The goal is always to create detail-oriented work by pushing the limits of the two-dimensional form. I like my process to be straightforward, rudimentary, and a geometric way of making art. My method of achieving this is working with simple forms that can accomplish fantastic things with simple shapes and different line weights.
