Biography
After a 30-year publishing career I rediscovered my inner child through painting. I returned to painting full-time after moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico. My work has appeared in many regional exhibitions and competitions, been honored with several “Best of Show” awards and is in many private collections in the U.S. and Europe.
Artist Statement
Inspired by the light, culture and natural beauty of the southwest, my main body of work, “Southwest Abstractions,” is a series of evocative landscapes celebrating our Land of Enchantment. The dark, sculpted beauty of New Mexico’s high desert, its rugged canyons and unique adobe structures are prominent in my work. I strive to capture the distinctive, luminous light of the southwest region and its rich indigenous traditions and Hispanic cultural heritage. Cultural and historic influences permeate my art. Some paintings depict actual landmarks; others depict indigenous ceremonies, pueblos and Spanish mission churches designed to capture a sense of community and cultural interconnectedness. Influenced by the Native American art of storytelling, I often incorporate images and symbols that hold deep multicultural and spiritual significance across generations. I work in a variety of media because I love the vibrancy of acrylics, the velvety texture of oils, and the mosaic quality of collage. My latest mixed media paintings incorporate my hand-painted papers resulting in unique effects that cannot be achieved through using paint alone. I offer customized workshops on collage paper painting techniques and collage as an artform.
