Biography
I have always done some form of art, starting in my childhood with watercolors and oil pastels. I took oil painting lessons as a teenager but was also fond of pen and ink (at least until I spilled black ink all over my bright yellow rug to the dismay of my mother!). As I got older and started to have children, I moved on to creating collages with found objects as they were easier to leave and work on in short spurts yet were still creative and fun. Many reinventions later, I rediscovered oil painting while working at the University of New Mexico and took every painting class they had. I love layering color and forms to create something on a blank canvas.
Artist Statement
My organic abstract oil paintings feel more like an uncovering process rather than a generative one. I frequently scribble on the canvas and then “see what I see.” We all have images that resonate with us, and I have found mine have a lot to do with New Mexico landscapes and environments. There are frequently stark horizon lines on which plant forms, sky and energy hang out with lots of color to make things feel alive and vibrant. I love oil paint and often use a dry layering technique so that colors underneath continue to show through. This creates a softness to facilitate space for contemplation and good feelings.
