Biography
I have lived in New Mexico most of my life. I went to High School at Manzano High, UNM and then TVI, which is now CNM, to earn a bachelor’s degree in science. After living for 30 years in Los Alamos, my husband and I retired and moved to Rio Rancho. Like many families, cancer has touched ours. That is why the mission of the NMCC Foundation is very important to me. My mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, my father with liver cancer, and both my sister and sister-in-law with breast cancer.
I’m currently a member of the Pastel Society of New Mexico, and I am working on elevating my skills. The vibrant Albuquerque art community has helped tremendously in boosting my confidence. Workshops and classes have been wonderful resources. I have shown my work in the Art League of NM, The Weems Art Gallery through the Pastel Society of New Mexico and the New Mexico Cancer Center.
Artist Statement
Working with pastels allows me to express the beauty of the New Mexico landscape through layers of pure pigment. There are so many colors to choose from. Rich vibrant colors make creating light and shadows fun. Pastel papers range from soft to sanded in different depths, able to hold several layers of pastel color. This allows me to glaze over one color to softly create and mix colors without physically having to mix colors.
Continuous learning is central to my practice. Workshops and mentoring from fellow artists have elevated my skills and boosted my confidence. While I have worked in other mediums, pastels have truly touched my heart. The works that I can create in pastels literally bring me great joy which in return keeps me motivated to continue and share my work with others!
