I am primarily a self-taught artist who began my artistic journey with photography. I focused on intimate black and white images chronicling everyday life in Greenwich Village and SoHo during the 1980s. Working primarily in lower New York City, I was attracted to the local people who defined these neighborhoods - gallery owners, booksellers, restaurateurs, social club members, and children playing on street corners - and I was intrigued with trying to capture the spirit of these small communities that have changed dramatically.
To improve my technical foundation, I studied with Oliver Gagliani at his workshop in Virginia City, where I trained in large - format photography and the Zone System developed by Ansel Adams. For years, I developed and printed my own work, improving my ability to “see”. In addition to Oliver Gagliani, I admire the work of Minor White, Paul Caponigro, and Paul Strand for their composition and simplicity.
Before settling in NYC, I earned a BS from Rutgers University, moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts for several years and then returned to NYC to pursue photography. During these years, I was fortunate to travel to Egypt, UK, France, Italy, Russia which exposed me to many cultures and customs that have influenced my art.
I worked in real estate for many years, traveling to Moscow with a Russian/American joint venture to develop commercial real estate in Russia. When this venture ended, I returned to school while raising a family, to earn a master’s degree in education. After being an educator for 25 years, I retired and focused full time on my artistic interests.
After relocating to New Mexico in 2016, I shifted my focus from photography to painting, beginning with watercolors and moving to acrylics and oil on wood and canvas. Living in the East Mountains of New Mexico, I have countless opportunities to hike the Sandias or walk the prairies, finding more subjects than I have time to paint. I have been fortunate to study with some accomplished artists such as Polly Jackson and Dianna Reitz.
My painting work has been shown in 2024 and 2025 at the juried show in the Fine Art Gallery at the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque. I have had solo exhibitions at Roots Farm Cafe in Tijeras, NM and Cabra Cafe in Cedar Crest, NM as well as participating in various shows at The Gallery ABQ in Albuquerque. Recently my photography work was juried into a show at New Mexico Art League. I am a member of the New Mexico Art League, Rio Grande Art Association, and Plein Air Painters of New Mexico.
