Originally from South Dakota, Tamara McDonald moved to Albuquerque 25 years ago. Her art journey began over a decade ago, working exclusively in pastels and several years ago she incorporated watercolors into her practice, which naturally led to her exploration of fluid acrylics as a medium for creating abstract artwork. Her process utilizes the fluid dynamics of acrylic paint on canvas, resulting in bright, often saturated colors and dynamic textures. These elements bring to life recurring abstracted motifs such as flowers, feathers and other botanical shapes and textures, which she sees as a reflection of the profound beauty found in nature.

Her abstract work with acrylics on canvas is inspired by her love of nature. Through all of life’s ups and downs, being able to step outside and breathe in the air, to see the limitlessness of the sky, and to feel the ground under her feet always helps her find perspective and feel connected to something bigger than herself. Her process begins with creating a design using fluid acrylics, which she then dips the canvas into, gently guiding the paint from the back of the canvas to blend colors and create texture.

Through her art, she hopes to inspire viewers to slow down and reconnect with the world around them, appreciating the beauty that exists even in imperfect moments. Her paintings are a celebration of the beauty found in nature and a reminder that in this increasingly digital and disconnected world, we are all part of something living, breathing and beautiful.
